SUMMARY:Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day \nMonday — 5.26.2025 \n* FBCAD Office Closed * \n  \nMemorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is one of the federal holidays in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States. \nIt is a day for visiting cemeteries and memorials to mourn the military personnel who died in the line of duty. Volunteers will place American flags on the graves of those military personnel in national cemeteries. Others such as family and friends will also come to lay flowers and grieve on the graves of those who died in the US military. \nThe first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30\, 1868. Then known as Decoration Day and observed on May 30\, the holiday was proclaimed by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the American Civil War. This national observance followed many local observances which were inaugurated between the end of the Civil War and Logan’s declaration. Many cities and people have claimed to be the first to observe it. However\, the National Cemetery Administration\, a division of the Department of Veterans Affairs\, credits Mary Ann Williams with originating the “idea of strewing the graves of Civil War soldiers—Union and Confederate” with flowers. \nOfficial recognition as a holiday spread among the states\, beginning with New York in 1873. By 1890\, every Union state had adopted it. The world wars turned it into a day of remembrance for all members of the U.S. military who fought and died in service. In 1971\, Congress standardized the holiday as “Memorial Day” and changed its observance to the last Monday in May. \nTwo other days celebrate those who have served or are serving in the U.S. military: Armed Forces Day\, which is earlier in May\, an unofficial U.S. holiday for honoring those currently serving in the armed forces\, and Veterans Day on November 11\, which honors all those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

SUMMARY:New Year's Day
DESCRIPTION:* FBCAD Office Closed *\n \n  \nNew Year’s Day\, First day of the new year\, celebrated with religious\, cultural\, and social observances around the world. It is usually marked by rites and ceremonies that symbolize casting off the old year and rejoicing in the new. Most of the world recognizes January 1 as the start of a new year because the Gregorian calendar\, from its papal origin in 1582\, has become the international reference for treaties\, corporate contracts\, and other legal documents. Nevertheless\, numerous religious and national calendars have been retained.

SUMMARY:Thanksgiving
DESCRIPTION:* FBCAD Office Closed *\n \n  \nA national holiday with feasting is traced to the Pilgrims and Puritans who emigrated from England in the 1620s and 1630s. They brought their previous tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. The 1621 Plymouth\, Massachusetts thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. The Pilgrims celebrated this with the Wampanoags\, a tribe of Native Americans who\, along with the last surviving Patuxet\, had helped them get through the previous winter by giving them food in that time of scarcity\, in exchange for an alliance and protection against the rival Narragansett tribe.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day
DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day\, holiday (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Given their similarities\, it has been suggested that the holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia\, held in mid-February. The festival\, which celebrated the coming of spring\, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century\, Pope Gelasius I forbid the celebration of Lupercalia and is sometimes attributed with replacing it with St. Valentine’s Day\, but the true origin of the holiday is vague at best. Valentine’s Day did not come to be celebrated as a day of romance until about the 14th century. Also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine.

SUMMARY:MLK Day
DESCRIPTION:Office Closed\n  \nTaking place each year on the third Monday in January\, the Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Day of Service (MLK Day) is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on\, not a day off.” Participation in service activities has grown each year as more Americans are encouraged to provide meaningful change in their communities. Whether service meets a tangible need\, such as fixing up a school or senior center\, builds a sense of community or mutual responsibility. In a pandemic environment\, service can take on the form of sending a meal through a meal delivery service\, serving as a virtual mentor\, or donating money to a charitable cause to help those who lack basic essential items.
